He added, "Karl joined us in October 2012, and was a valued colleague who was providing strong leadership at a challenging time for the Indian auto industry. In this hour of grief, our thoughts are with Karl’s wife and family."

Karl Sylm joined the company at a time when the market was not in a good shape, so as Tata Motors. In order to get things right for Tata Motors, he took several steps including restructuring of the management, component sourcing and philosophy behind new products.

He disbanded the old management structure, which was separated by segments. This was replaced by eight functional heads-engineering, corporate strategy, sourcing etc. Each of them had a vision to unify Tata Motors' identity. For example, Tata Motors had different sourcing groups for its three operating segments- passenger cars, Nano and commercial vehicles, which were later replaced by only one group, buying for all the segments.
