Amidst the slowing down demand in the Indian auto market, the country’s largest vehicle maker Tata Motors has decreased the production of most of its portfolio car models in the country including the small car Tata Nano. In the month of September, the firm is expected to manufacture about 12,000 units of its passenger cars in the Indian auto market during September 2011, as compared to 17,821 cars produced in the same month last year, expected to account for a drop of over 33 percent, industry sources claimed.

As per the data released by SIAM (Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers), the homegrown car maker produced 18,700 cars a month on an average during the April to August 2011 period. In august 2011, the company sales dipped by whopping 41 percent to 13,854 units, mainly due to a steep fall in the sales small car Nano. The sales of Tata Nano model stood at 1,143 units during August 2011, as compared to 7,739 units sold in the same month last year.

However, the fall in sales and production cut was not limited to Tata Motors, as the sentiment remained gloomy in both July and August 2011, with a decrease of 16 percent and 10 percent in car sales, respectively. The production of India’s best-selling car Maruti Alto dipped 5 percent in the month of August 2011. The increased car loan rate and high fuel prices are expected to further slowdown sales in the coming months.
