American car-maker Chevrolet has been working on a bigger and better version of its popular electric sedan named 'Volt'. The second-generation of Volt is being tested currently and expected to be launched in the open market in about two years time. The production for the car is due to begin next year at Detroit-Hamtramck assembly plant General Motors Detroit-Hamtramck assembly plant.

The existing version of Chevrolet Volt delivers about a run time of about 80.46 kms on electric power. Alternatively, the sedan also gets a 1.4-litre petrol engine that generates about 150 Bhp of power and activates when the batteries are drained out. The newer version shall probably receive a similar power-train. Thomas Sedran, GM’s Vice President of Strategy and Operations, said, “In the coming years I don’t think you will need 100km [62 miles] of electric range. Around 30 to 50km [18 to 30 miles] should be enough to get you in and out of town and after that you still have the range-extender engine to help.”

Along with the Volt sedan, the American car-maker Chevrolet has also hinted on a possible launch of Vauxhall Ampera and Cadillac ELR to go on sale in the year 2016. Steve Girsky, Vice Chairman of GM and interim president of GM Europe, said, “The Ampera has one of the highest customer satisfaction ratings of any car, but it’s simply too expensive. If you want to make money it’s not about the cleverest technology, but who can deliver fuel economy at a lower cost.”

The Chevrolet Volt is expected to receive a new front wheel drive pattern as followed by the Cruze line. This would help in delivering a revised power train and make it cost effective. Detailed specifications and pricing is not revealed for now and it may be known post an official announcement made by the company.
