      Mercedes-Benz hikes its Production Capacity in India

      Mercedes-Benz has doubled the capacity of its assembly to 20000 units on a yearly basis. Apart from Germany, India would be the first market where Mercedes-Benz would make an entry. The company has incidentally, seen 40 per cent growth in sales over the year. Local assembly capacity is witnessing a hike apart from sales network expansion and new model launches.

      Eberhard Kern, the MD and CEO of the company said, "India is one of the focus markets for Mercedes Benz globally, and with the addition of a new plant, we are getting future ready." The manufacturing facility was inaugurated by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis in the presence of Union Environment Minister Prakash Javadekar. The addition of GLA SUV in the product portfolio has taken the total number of products in the line-up to six models. This includes the S-, E-, C-Class sedans and the GL- and ML-Class sedans. The CLA sedan will also be added to the list of products sometime later in the year.

      Luxury cars have been witnessing a hike in the Indian market in the last couple of years. Kern said that the sale of luxury cars will witness a much higher growth in the next couple of years. It will touch 40000 this year, which was previously at 33000. Mercedes-Benz has been ruling the roost in the luxury car segment. BMW, the German compatriot of Mercedes-Benz, is placed at third while Audi stands at number two.
