Maruti has geared itself to provide more fuel efficient cars in India. It has launched a "One Component, One Gram" program according to which its shall reduce one gram weight for each of its component. A Maruti car approximately has nearly 10000 components and sub-components under nearly 1500 categories. A net reduction of one gram in each part would result in new model which would be nearly 2.5 kg lighter than its existing models. The program would result in a net saving of Rs. 10 crores for the industry.
Maruti had mentioned "lighter, faster and better" cars in its annual report this year. The company MD, Shinzo Nakanishi has now launched "one component, one gram" along the lines of its new vision to provide lighter and more fuel efficient cars in India.
Maruti suppliers like Asahi India, Lumax, Krishna Maruti, JBML, Shriram Pistons are also now planning to cut down one gram in each of their components supplied to Maruti manufacturing plant. This would result in a new style and design along with more fuel efficient cars that are lighter and better for Indian roads. Maruti sold 7.5 lakh units in the last fiscal year. A reduction in 2.5 kg weight would mean savings of Rs. 50 per kilo that translates into saving of Rs. 130 per car.
