Mahindra Reva Electric Vehicles Private Limited (MREVPL), the Indian multinational active in 26 countries, has inaugurated its new 100-crore production facility in Bommasandra near Bangalore on August 22, 2012. MREVPL became a subsidiary of Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) Group when the company secured a majority share holding in Reva Electric Car Company in May, 2010.
Expressing his views on the new facility, Anand Mahindra, Chairman and Managing Director (MD), M&M Group, said. “The automobile industry is at an inflexion point that will re-shape the way we own and use mobility solutions.”
The new facility in Bangalore is currently the world's largest operational plant, exclusively dedicated to the assembly of battery operated electric vehicles. Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED), the US based company that grades buildings on the basis of its impact on the environment and sustainability, has certified the new Bangalore plant to have one of the lowest dirt-to-dust carbon footprints in the world.
Reportedly, the new production plant is adept in assembling 30,000 battery operated vehicles every year and will reach its maximum production output in three years. MREVPL has revealed that the production will start in September, 2012 with initial production of 6,000 units per year. Anand Mahindra also announced that the company will introduce the new Reva NXR to the Indian car market in a couple of months.
Chetan Maini, Chief of technology and strategy at MREVPL has referred Scandinavia and China as key markets in the electric vehicle segment and affirmed that the latter currently has 100 million electric vehicles on-road. He also announced that the company is looking ahead to begin a crowd sourcing process to outsource environment friendly ideas from the public.
Reportedly, the new Reva NXR, deemed as the next generation electric vehicle, will be the first car to be manufactured at the Bangalore based facility. MREVPL wrapped off Reva NXR in 2012 New Delhi Auto Expo, held in January this year. The current Reva vehicles are priced between Rs. 4.2 lacs and Rs. 5.2 lacs (on-road price, Bangalore). Since its foray in 2001 in the Indian auto industry, the sales of Reva car in country stand at 4,500 units.
