Mahindra and Mahindra has been a name that has been synonymous for its potential in the diesel engine SUV segment in the country. The brand has withstood the test of time and has successfully delivered some of the finest diesel trims in the country. This time around the carmaker had been faced with fast dipping market share in the domestic market. The company currently holds only about 35 – 36% market share in the Sports Utility Vehicle segment as against 58 – 59% market share. To overcome this dip, the company is likely to introduce new petrol engine options in the country.

Speaking more on this occasion, Pawan Goenka, “We are not going to count on fuel price difference as our long term strategy. That means we need to have more petrol vehicles. In our future product launches, we will always have equal content in terms of variants of diesel and petrol vehicles in the passenger car category.”

In the international markets, Mahindra and Mahindra offers its vehicles in the petrol trims, whereas in the domestic market, the company has only offered diesel trims. The commercial vehicle segment offering by the company in India shall however continue to be offered in diesel trims. Mahindra and Mahindra holds about 70% stake in South Korean company Ssangyong that supplies 1.2 Liter, 1.6 Liter and 2.2 Litre petrol engines.
