We have already seen test mules of the next-gen Land Rover Discovery being tested in the Arctic and now here’s one on the bustling streets of China. Interestingly, the prototype model here has given us our first good look at the headlight design, the grille and the front bumper.

The Discovery has been on sale for a long time and will be replaced with the fifth-generation model that you see here. The latter will be built using Land Rover’s aluminium platform that underpins the Range Rover and the Range Rover Sport. This lightweight new platform will allow for significant weight savings over the existing Discovery which is one of the heaviest vehicles in the market.

The new Discovery will be powered by four or six-cylinder engine options, depending on the market. The SUV will also have a hybrid option as well as Land Rover’s new Ingenium engine range.

The new Discovery will be introduced later this year to take on the BMW X5, Mercedes-Benz GLE and Audi Q7. It will be made in the UK and in China by the Chery-JLR joint venture.
