The Indian Government has finally taken the bold step forward to increase the speed of automobiles on Indian roads. It has been a long time since it was last changed, 25 years to be precise, but finally, the Government has decided to allow room for faster movement on highways. The official speed limit was not fixed for cars, which ran on highways. However, the maximum speed limit has been fixed now by the Indian Government for travelling on highways. If the new rules are taken into account, a four wheeler is allowed to hit up to the 100 kilometres per hour mark on highways.

On the other hand, for bikes, this maximum speed has been fixed at 80 kilometres an hour. However, the local police authorities have been given the rights to change and bring down the maximum limit on highways for that particular location if they feel that this criterion might be dangerous for the roads. As the quality of the highways is more or less uniform in the country, it is expected that the maximum speed limit will remain the same throughout. On the other hand, it is expected that the local police authorities for each location will come up with speed limits as per the quality of roads in a certain locality.

Additionally, those vehicles that carry more than nine passengers at a time have been allowed to travel at a maximum speed of 80 kilometres per hour. Even the good carriages are now allowed to hit the same mark on highways. Earlier, this was 65 kilometres an hour for large vehicles. The two-wheelers have been given the maximum leverage as previously; the maximum speed limit for them was 50 kilometres per hour. This on one hand has forced drivers around the nation to become more responsible. With greater speed, greater control is also required for a safe driving. Similarly, the government now has to make sure that the potholes and craters are completely removed from the highways, at least. These are the most important reasons for accidents that occur on the road as they pop out of nowhere. Simultaneously, airbags an ABS should be made mandatory in automobiles. These are such equipment that makes driving safer if installed in the cars and bikes. Moreover, it is now the responsibility of the government as well as the drivers to make sure that these speed limits are actually enforced.
