General Motors to Produce Its Own Electric Cars

General Motors had inked MoU with Reva Electric last year to produce electric variant of its small car model Chevrolet Spark. In the wake of present developments between Mahindra and Reva, the American auto giant has decided to snap its ties with Reva to produce any electric cars. "Now with Reva changing its ownership we saw no particular value in doing this experiment," said GM India’s president and managing director Karl Slym.

General Motors now plans to produce its own electric cars in Detroit, US. Moreover, it is also largely believed that General Motors will launch its hybrid vehicle Chevrolet Volt in India by the fourth quarter of this year rather than going into production for electric cars so soon.

General Motors is expanding rapidly in India and China. In order to retain its growth, it has planned several new models for the Indian market in next two years. It has also recently tied up with Chinese auto maker SAIC to source auto components and introduce newer commercial vehicles for the domestic market.
