The Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) has reportedly strongly opposed the ban enforced by the Gauhati High Court on the sale and registration of small cars in Assam, that do not meet Global New Car Assessment Programme (NCAP) crash test norms. Owing to the petition filed by the SIAM, the court had to lift the ban that had adverse effect on about 140 models from different manufacturers.

The court said in its order, “There cannot be any prohibition restricting registration and sale of four-wheelers with a mass of up to 1,500 kg and quadricycles that have undergone the crash and emission tests conforming to the requirements and standards set by the Bureau of Indian Standards... and vehicles which have been certified by the statutory authority.”

Currently NCAP norms are not applicable in the country for now. Some of the to selling models like Hyundai's i10 and Eon, Honda Jazz and Maruti Suzuki Alto had also faced a ban in the region. In the state of Assam, the car sales numbers every month stood to around 5,000 units.
