Electric Vehicles in India fails to generate interest on a large scale

Though there have been several talks about initiating and promoting electric vehicles in India, not much have yet materialised. Every new government that comes to power insists on the promotion of electric vehicles, however, not much have come into effect. Talking about the environmental aspects, a lot needs to be done to reduce the pollution levels in the atmosphere.

As per a new report, sales of electric vehicles have reduced by almost 50 per cent in the running calendar year. The electric automobile industry has sold only about 24000 units till the end of the running year as compared to the 43000 units done in the last year. Both, two-wheelers and four-wheelers contributed to this count. The electric industry has made a great market in 2012, where it was able to sell around 1.1 lakh units. This was because there was lot of support from the government in the form of subsidies. However, there was a withdrawal in subsidies later on and simultaneously, the numbers reduced quite drastically. This is definitely not good for the electric vehicles in the Indian market.

There were approximately 22 car makers in the industry initially, which have reduced to seven as of now. The biggest paradox is that most of these seven were marketed by multinational companies or have a significant presence in international markets. Though, there is something to cheer about for the electric vehicles. The new government is looking forward for the implementation of the policy, which will boost the electric vehicles.

National Electric Mobility Mission Plan (NEMMP) is yet to take off, though it is the only way for the growth of electric vehicles in India. This policy was given the go-ahead by the then Prime Minister in 2012 and has plans to have more than six to seven million electric vehicles implemented by 2020. This will on the long run save 30000 crores INR fuel bill for the new government. There are some expectations that the coming budget will have something to cheer about for the electric vehicles.
