      Compensation amount for road accident victims likely to be raised

      A delay in amending the Motor Vehicle Act, 1988 asking for increase in compensation for accident victims has resulted in Bombay High Court rebuking the center for the delay. The court is reportedly unhappy with Center and the state who seemed to hold a casual approach when it came to dealing with the Law Commission's recommendations that called for amendments in IPC sections that can curb rash driving. Whereas, the state's affidavit reads out that the bill has been passed for amendment of sections of the Act and that it has been sent further for Presidential assent.

      The court has also stated that a meager compensation formula fixed in the early nineties cannot be applicable in modern times. A PIL filed after actor Salman Khan's car rammed into a laundry in Bandra in 2002, was heard by was heard by division bench of Justice Abhay Oka and Justice A S Gadkari. The 2002 incident left one person dead and four others injured.
