      BMW unveils X1 in India, starting at Rs 22 lakh

      BMW India, one the leading luxury car makers in Indian market, launched its much anticipated compact sports utility vehicle – BMW X1 – in the country, on Thursday. The car has been rolled-out in three variants including X1 sDrive18i (petrol) at Rs 22 lakh, X1 sDrive20d (diesel) at Rs 23.9 lakh and X1 sDrive20d Exclusive (diesel) at Rs 29.9 lakh. The company will use the completely knocked down (CKD) unit route for importing this car in India, which will later be assembled at BMW’s Chennai plant. Over 1000 units of this car have already been booked in the country.

      The petrol version of X1 sports a 1.8L engine that is capable of generating a maximum power of 150 hp and peak torque of 200 Nm. On the other hand, the diesel variant carries a 2.0L engine with turbocharger that delivers 177 hp of peak power along with 350 Nm of peak torque. Both diesel and petrol versions of the car come equipped with a six-speed automatic transmission and a dynamic rear-wheel drive.

      Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Andreas Schaaf, President, BMW India said, “The new BMW X1 is a modern vehicle that for the first time brings premium BMW characteristics into the compact vehicle segment. The new BMW X1 sets a benchmark by bringing together features of a Sports Activity Vehicle with spontaneous flexibility and outstanding fuel economy. The new BMW X1 is the perfect vehicle for customers focusing on areas such as leisure activities and lifestyle in their choice of car.”

      Launched with a competitive price tag, the new BMW X1 is now the cheapest BMW brand car in the Indian market. The car will be fighting for space with about half a dozen competing SUVs of this segment that comprises of Chevrolet Captiva, Toyota Fortuner, Ford Endeavour, Honda CR-V, Mitsubishi Outlander and Nissan X-Trail.
