Alcazar Expert Review
Good Things
- Feels more than just a seven-seater Creta
- 2.0-litre petrol engine offers strong performance
Could be Better
- Low speed ride on stiffer side
- Doesn’t feel like a tough SUV
Engine and Gearbox
For those who still prefer a diesel SUV, Hyundai is smartly offering an oil-burner with its 1.5-litre unit producing 113bhp and 250Nm of torque. For others who choose the petrol, there's a 2.0-litre naturally-aspirated mill churning out 157bhp and 191Nm of torque. And it’s a good choice as there's no disparity in the fuel prices now. And whatever you choose, all the power is transmitted only to the front wheels through either a six-speed manual, or a six-speed automatic gearbox as with this model that we are testing.
Push the start button and the engine shows off its refinement with a quiet engine note and nice controlled vibrations. Even the excellent NVH levels are apparent as the engine noise doesn't intrude in the cabin unless revved hard. Slot the tastefully designed gear cog in D, start releasing the brake, and the SUV starts moving ahead steadily. Even if you press the accelerator, it won't catch you by surprise as the power build-up is quite linear. It doesn't lurch forward but does start making good progress and without realising you are catching up with traffic and even doing good speeds post 1,500rpm. And with its redline at 6,500rpm, it does have a nice, wide, and usable powerband. Then, apart from good city drivability, it's quite capable out on the highway too. It carries off high speeds giving a feeling that it won't bog down even with a full load. Yes, the Alcazar doesn't give you the thrills, but drive it sanely, and it will do its job without a hiccup.
Credit also goes to the six-speed torque converter gearbox that puts out the power nicely even with varied throttle inputs. More interestingly, passengers won't notice the gears being changed unless taking special note of it. Even with the gas pedal being floored, there are no abrupt changes and shifts happen within a reasonably quick time. It's quite believable for this to have a claimed 0-100kmph sprint time of sub-10 seconds. And, whatever driving mode (Comfort, Eco, Sport) you are in, it never feels jerky even when you put it in manual mode or use the paddle shifters. Comfort is the default mode, which when changed to Sport sharpens up the throttle response, slightly firms up the steering wheel, and lets you hold on to the revs for longer before upshifting. The Eco mode conversely, upshifts earlier in favour of fuel efficiency, which by the way, is rated at 14.2kmpl for this AT trim.
Ride Quality and Handling
Like most SUVs and vehicles, the Alcazar gets McPherson struts with coil spring in the front and a coupled torsion beam axle at the rear. Hyundai has tuned it well and it does a commendable job in ironing out the undulations especially on our road conditions. It does feel slightly on the stiffer side, but dismisses small or large bumps well and without any pronounced thuds. Also, it will clear most obstacles with 200m of ground clearance and 18-inch alloys. That said, it still won't smother the uneven roads like a tough SUV and constant suspension movement can be felt. However, at high speeds this reduces; doesn't feel bouncy and is very stable making it a good highway cruiser.
Even for the handling bit, it’s quite predictable and won't catch you off guard. Apart from a slight play in the centre, its steering is well-weighted and just about three turns lock-to-lock, it’s not really a hassle to use. In fact, it’s light and nice to use while making U-turns or parking. It could have done with a little more feel and it gets evident while pushing it through corners. This is where you can feel the body roll, which is well controlled, and occupants will remain comfortable while taking long bends at high speeds. What's also reassuring are the all-round disc brakes which lend the SUV enough stopping power even during panic braking. The ABS with EBD is well-tuned to even modulate stopping from high speeds and the Apollo rubber does comply with sufficient grip.
Comfort, Convenience and Features
We were expecting the Alcazar to replicate Creta's cabin, which is also the case, but with changes in spades. The most prominent change that adds a sense of premium is the hazel brown-black colour combination with stitching adding to the richness. The huge touchscreen, digital instrument cluster, ambient lighting, new centre console, and a huge panoramic sunroof pump up the luxury quotient inside. Otherwise, the layout and design are the same and it still misses out on any soft-touch materials on the dash.
Now, with an increment in the Alcazar's size as against the Creta, the interior space has also increased with it getting a larger wheelbase. As a result, there's more than adequate space for second-row occupants and has added to the versatility of using this space. It comes in handy especially when making some more space for the third row occupants by sliding the second row ahead. It's good enough to fit in average 5’ 8” height individuals for short trips, otherwise kids would be the only most comfortable ones during a long haul. And behind these slightly reclining seats, even when in use, is 180 litres of boot space. That's a first and class-leading!
The Alcazar is being offered in three trims - Prestige, Platinum, and Signature. Gladly, even the entry-level Prestige trim is packed with loads of equipment. However, this top-of-the-line Signature variant is only available with a six-seat layout. We'd expected the Alcazar to carry over the exhaustive feature list from the Creta and it also gets all of them. Some of the noteworthy ones include a 10.25-inch infotainment screen, Bose music system, ventilated seats, and connected car tech. The latter boasts 60 added features here. Additionally, you'd appreciate Hyundai to add more exclusivity to the Alcazar over the Creta for adding new features like a 360 degree camera, a blind-spot monitor into the virtual cockpit drivers MID, and even an extra wireless charge pad in the second row! Now, call out that I'm nit-picking, but I feel it still could have done with a dual-zone AC.
Safety features
It goes without saying that the safety suite from the Creta has been replicated with the Alcazar. So, standard safety features include dual airbags, ISOFIX child seat mounts, ABS with EBD, ESC, hill start assist, rear parking sensors, a rear parking camera, and rear disc brakes. What's more, it gets auto headlamps, LED fog lamps, auto-dimming interior rear-view mirror, rear defogger and wiper, and a tyre pressure monitor as well.
Exterior Design
Though the Alcazar has grown in size over the Creta, it doesn't feel an elongated version of it, and has adequate proportions. You might mistake its face with the Creta from a distance, but thanks to the generous use of smoked bronze chrome, you'll be able to differentiate this to be the more premium one. Bigger alloys with a trendy design pattern, longer rear doors, and a more upright rear section distinguish the Alcazar from the Creta. Round at the back, the bold 'ALCAZAR' lettering is just a confirmation to establish the new SUV that gets new LED tail lamps in a more conventional style cluster in place of Creta's debatable styling. The Alcazar indeed looks more mature, premium and rich.
Conclusion
Filling the gap between the Creta and Tucson in Hyundai's line-up here, the Alcazar goes up against other three-row SUV offerings in our market, namely, the MG Hector Plus, Tata Safari, Mahindra XUV500, and even the upcoming Mahindra XUV700. The Alcazar’s ex-showroom prices start at Rs 16.30 lakh, topping off at Rs 19.99 lakh. There's not much to think then as Hyundai has played its cards well by introducing it in six-seater (second-row captain’s seats) and seven-seater (middle-row bench seats) versions. Then, with the option of petrol and diesel engines, both being offered with manual or automatic gearboxes. And, even if the extra features are introduced to the Creta later, the Alcazar still does have the bragging rights of having some exclusive features over its five-seater sibling now. This smart move will help in bringing success to their new SUV, which betters everything that the Creta is and has. This also means it’s not a hard task for Hyundai to lure in new buyers or even retain their customers by convincing Creta owners to upgrade to the Alcazar!

Good Things
- Easy to drive compared to other seven-seaters
- Feature-loaded and comfortable cabin
- Good alternative to D-segment sedans
Could be Better
- Lacks grunt when pushed hard
- Only six-seat option for higher-spec diesel-auto combo
Engine and Gearbox
Hyundai is offering the same 1.5-litre four-cylinder diesel in the Alcazar that does duty in the Creta. The U2 CRDi diesel’s identical power output of 113bhp and 250Nm might appear modest at first but it certainly has its benefits in the engine bay of the Alcazar. It’s a pretty refined oil-burner which we have already seen in the Creta but in the Alcazar, it might seem underwhelming.
At idle, the four-cylinder diesel is silent and remains vibe free almost throughout the rev range – only getting vocal close to its 4,500rpm redline. But despite Hyundai’s claim of tuning the engine and gearbox in order to recompense the Alcazar’s added weight, the outright grunt you’d expect from a seven-seater diesel SUV is felt amiss. Especially under high-load conditions where the Alcazar’s diesel sometimes feels out of breath and strained – especially when compared to the 168bhp/350Nm you get in the Tata Safari.
As for the aforementioned benefits of using this diesel in the Alcazar – it feels very usable for day-to-day driving. It’s quiet and predictable with just enough firepower to keep up with traffic fairly easily. However, out on the highway, making a sudden overtake might have to be replaced with a well-planned one instead. Otherwise, the Alcazar can do its fair share of interstate runs thanks to its frugal nature which might be easier on your pocket than other diesel seven-seaters. As for the gearbox, the torque converter shifts smoothly and holds on to gear when pushed hard. What’s more, you also get a set of paddle-shifters when you want to take command for some spirited driving.
Ride Quality and Handling
With its underpinnings shared with the Creta, the Alcazar offers similar ride and handling characteristics – which in other words makes it very amiable and driver-friendly. It’s not a light steering but is progressive and remains predictable, although we found it slightly vague off-centre. Also, the evident body roll doesn’t help your confidence when looking to take a corner with slightly more enthusiasm than necessary.
On the upside, the ride of the Alcazar remains pliant as it manages to absorb irregularities that the rain-ravaged roads throw in its way. Although it might be on a stiffer side, you only feel and hear the very sharpest of potholes and road joints. Otherwise, the ride won’t make the passengers feel uncomfortable at any point, even on longer jaunts.
Comfort, Convenience, and Features
Stepping inside the Alcazar is easy thanks to its low height – yet Hyundai has taken the liberty of providing a side-step here. On the inside, it’s a familiar affair once again with everything carried over from the Creta. You do get a richer looking finish and contrast colour materials here, like the swanky brown over dark black. There are a few additional features here too, which include a 360-degree camera and a blind-view monitor that uses the wing-mirror-mounted cameras to give you a view of the blind spot on the instrument cluster when the indicators are running.
Talking about the instrument cluster – it’s an all-digital unit in the Alcazar and looks inspired by Mercedes-Benz to a great extent. There’s the familiar 10.25-inch touchscreen display integrated on the dash as well as a fairly usable and uncluttered space on the centre console. The ambience of the Alcazar’s cabin is further elevated by a massive panoramic sunroof scaling the entire dimension of the roof. Even the seats are comfortable and cocoon the passengers well. The same can be said about the captain seats in the middle.
With the middle row getting a dedicated armrest on the centre console, there’s an additional wireless charger pad, storage, and cup holders for centre passengers. They also benefit from separate air vents, window blinds, adjustable headrests, and a backseat mounted tray. The second row is the best place to be in the Alcazar as it offers an opulent feel usually reserved for cars that cost almost twice or thrice this Hyundai.
Lastly, the third row appears to be best suited for kids and young adults at the best. And if you do cram in a full-size adult, it best be for shorter jaunts. To keep them from complaining on those small trips, there are separate air vents with a blower, USB ports, and an adjustable headrest for third-row passengers. Getting into the third row isn’t a gracious affair either and with the three rows up, the available boot space won’t be sufficient enough for weekend luggage of the six people seated inside.
On the safety front, you get the usual net from the Creta which includes dual front airbags, ISOFIX child seat mounts, ABS with EBD, ESC, hill start assist, rear parking sensors, a rear parking camera, and rear disc brakes. Other features include LED lamps, auto headlamps, auto-dimming IRVM, and a tyre pressure monitor.
Exterior
Upfront, the Alcazar stands out with its studded grille done up in the subtle dark-chrome finish. It looks regal if not unique over the Creta in terms of front-end design. Move to the side and things start to get interesting. Its flat roof makes the profile look slightly bigger than it is. We love how the C-pillar of the Creta is integrated into the Alcazar yet it doesn’t look out of place.
Well defined crease lines and blacked-out D-pillar along with the roof rails and funky-looking 18-inch wheels complement the Alcazar’s stance. At the back, it reminds us of a certain erstwhile Tata SUV owing to its rectangular LED taillight signature. But the chrome strip joining the taillamps, faux bumper inserts, and dual-tip exhaust tips made in a special design make this three-row Hyundai standout over the controversial rear end of the Creta. Overall, it’s a very affable design with pleasant changes and makeovers to keep things interesting.
Conclusion
Priced at Rs 24.35 lakh (on-road Mumbai), the Hyundai Alcazar is almost three lakh rupees more expensive than the equivalent top-spec Creta in the diesel automatic guise. For that extra money, you get a slightly bigger car which you can boast as a three-row SUV. A few features and quite a comfortable middle row even if you don’t really have a need for six seats but want a practical four-seater that is easy for everyday driving.
Sure, it might not pack the punch of the Tata Safari or have gizmos laid all around like in the MG Hector Plus (which doesn’t have a diesel-auto combo). But it undercuts both of them in terms of pricing – even the soon-to-be-replaced Mahindra XUV500. So, the Alcazar should be ideal for a buyer upgrading from a compact SUV or a C-segment sedan and doesn’t want a big, burly mover but a practical six-seater with enough kit and comfort backed by Hyundai’s solid sales and aftersales.

About Hyundai Alcazar
Summary
Hyundai has officially entered the three-row SUV segment in India with the Alcazar. Essentially based on the five-seat Creta, the Alcazar is offered with two powertrains, six colours across three variants. It will also be a strong contender to the Mahindra XUV500, MG Hector Plus, and the recently launched Tata Safari.
Exterior
Appearance-wise, the Alcazar mimics its five-seat sibling Creta on which it is based. However, look beyond the C-pillar and the Alcazar has its own distinct design and styling. The elements that distinguish it from the Creta include the new front grille, revised LED headlamps and fog lamps, 18-inch dual-tone alloy wheels, front and rear silver faux plate, and the newly designed split LED tail lamps with the ‘Alcazar’ lettering on the chrome bar at the centre. The SUV can be had in six variants – Signature, Signature (O), Prestige, Prestige (O), Platinum, and the Platinum (O).
Interior
On the inside, the 2,760mm wheelbase gives way for a spacious and roomy cabin. With a brimful of features like ambient lighting, a panoramic sunroof, Bose sound system, air purifier with AQI display, eight-way electrically adjustable driver seat, and puddle lamps with the brand logo projection make the Alcazar an appealing proposition. It also gets a 10.25-inch digital driver’s display and touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Hyundai’s BlueLink connected-car technology. Accessing the third row is easy with the second-row seats getting a one-touch tip and tumble seats. The Alcazar can be had as a six or seven-seater with the middle row seats placed as a captain or bench format.
Engine and Transmission
The powertrain options for the Alcazar include 2.0-litre petrol and a 1.5-litre diesel engine. The 1.5-litre diesel is the same as in the Creta producing 113bhp/250Nm of torque. Meanwhile, the petrol guise puts out a healthy 157bhp/191Nm of peak torque. The six-speed manual and the six-speed automatic gearbox is standard for both engines. It also gets three drive modes along with traction modes – Snow, Mud, and Sand.
User Reviews for Alcazar
- Bought Hyundai Alcazar Signature (O) Automatic Diesel 6 Seater few weeks ago after considering several 6 to 7 seater SUVs and MPVs such as Mahindra XUV700, Kia Carens, Tata Safari, etc. and even tested Jeep Compass. Out of all the cars mentioned above, I felt Alcazar has the most refined and smoothest engine especially in the Petrol variant. Initially thought to go with the Petrol variant, but was told by the dealer that the Signature variant dual tone has a waiting period of 45 days. However, as the diesel variant was readily available and my commute is more than 1700kms a month, decided to go with it. My previous car was Mahindra Marazzo M8 which I sold on Spinny for a reasonable price. Read several reviews on Alcazar before taking this decision. XUV700 was good, but the small niggles I faced with Marazzo coupled with huge waiting period made me to drop it. Test Kia Carens, but didn't like the interiors, driving experience and the ride quality. Dropped Tata Safari due to negative reviews. Alcazar felt miles ahead (except in terms of space for the last row) compared to all the above cars, in terms of build quality, features, ride quality, drive comfort and mileage. Was little sceptic regarding my decision to go with diesel though, as some reviews have pointed out that it feels underpowered, which was also my observation when I tested both the variants. However, once you cross 30 on the speedometer, the vehicle feels very smooth and is pleasure to drive. The Drive modes, Comfort, Eco and Sport, each give a different driving feel, Comfort being the most comfortable in the city and on the highways alike. However, Sports mode gives you maximum pleasure especially while driving on highways. I have got a mileage of 18.5kmpl while driving on Sports more at a speed of around 100kmph. On Eco mode in city with less traffic got around 21.8kmpl. On Comfort mode, the mileage in the city is around 16kmpl. All the above figures are excellent for a car like this and have reassured that I have taken the right decision going with diesel. The car won't feel underpowered at all. One of the few problems with Alcazar would be for an adult of more than 5 feet 5 inches to sit comfortably in the last row of the vehicle while leaving good space for the first and the middle rows. As my previous car was Marazzo which has best in class cabin space in all rows, this problem looked all the more obvious. Another problem is with the AC vents in the middle row as you will start to feel that they are not functioning. However, these issues are manageable as very rarely we travel with 6 adults and front AC was cooling the car quite good enough. We may also turn on the AC vents in the last row to get some air from behind. My most favourite features in Alcazar are the drive modes, large electronic sunroof, interior colours and the 360 degree view of the car. Alcazar may not look very big on the road, but it feels very premium than most cars in that price range. Me and my family have been in love with the vehicle since buying it. Great Job done by Hyundai! Pros: 1. Drive comfort 2. Ride quality 3. Premium interiors 4. Drive modes 5. Electronic Sunroof 6. 360 degree camera 7. Bose audio Cons: 1. Third row seating 2. Middle row AC

The Alcazar is an excellent SUV with the best features in its class. A fulldimensional car that is an overall sleek in size as a nice engineering that reduces the chances of an accident in many cases we have heard that someone has saved because of a difference of only an inch. This great composition has not compromised with the interior space and has given complete comfort. I strongly recommend this car which is definitely not comparable to the Creta as this comes in a completely luxury range. I don't think it's fair to compare with Creta because Alcazar has its own beauty and characteristics.
Interiors feel premium but performance is average. Car is not a value for money. Comfort wise car is good.
