The new Volvo S90 has been unveiled in Sweden ahead of its official debut at the 2016 Detroit Motor Show early next year. This is the Swedish automaker’s competitor for the Mercedes-Benz E-Class, BMW 5 Series, Audi A6 and the Jaguar XF. It will replace the S80 sedan in their lineup.

It follows in the footsteps of its SUV sibling the XC90 and is the second car to get the Volvo’s new design language and it too is based on Volvo’s Scalable Product Architecture (SPA). Its ‘Thor hammer’ headlights and the large Volvo grille define the face of the vehicle. There is certain amount of muscle to the design thanks to the bulge on the bonnet.

Its Swedish sensibility is visible on the side thanks to the straight forward design. Some of the visual highlights include the noticeable shoulder line, softly flared wheel arches, low roofline and chrome strip running along the bottom. The rear is low and kind of small and a stand out element are the tail lamps, which are C-shaped, and sit snugly on the edge of the body. They stretch out from the top and extend vertically all the way to the top of the rear bumper.

The interior is shared with the XC90 and the cabin is exactly the same right down to the layout of the elements. Its defining feature is the large touchscreen infotainment system, which controls most of the functions in the vehicle eliminating the need for a large number of buttons.

When the S90 is shown in Detroit, it will be offered in the top-spec T8 and T6 trims. There is also expected to be a T5 variant as well as a host of diesel powered models which should get the same oil-burners from the XC90. It will of course spawn an estate car called V90 and most probably at least one coupe model.

Given how quickly the XC90 came to the Indian market after its global debut, we should expect the S90 here by the middle of next year.
