Maurizio Reggiani, Lamborghini’s boss of R&D, has confirmed to reporters that the Urus hybrid is currently in the works.

Urus hybrid has been confirmed by Lamborghini

Lamborghini plans electrification only for the Urus SUV, and added that the Huracan and Aventador would continue to sell with their naturally aspirated V10 and V12 motors. The Urus will have the distinction of not only being the car maker’s first hybrid product, but also be Lamborghini’s first turbocharged model. It will be powered by the biturbo 4.0-litre V8 to produce all that torque that’s needed to satisfy the appetite of a performance oriented SUV.

Despite Lamborghini knowing that a diesel engine can fulfil their Urus’ demand for intense torque, it has no plans for a diesel powerplant. However, it is likely that the brand could look at going the fully-electric way with the Urus due to the stringent emission standards in the time to come. Lamborghini plans to make the Urus at their Sant’Agata Bolognese facility in the north of Italy, and it should hit the international arena in 2018.

The Urus hybrid may find its way to the line-up at a later time, should any tweaks need to be made to the base car. Stay tuned to CarTrade for more on the Lamborghini Urus in the time to follow.
