Turkey has invited Tata Motors to set up its production facility in Turkey to manufacture Tata Nano for the European markets. Tata Motors is planning to bring Tata Nano Europa which is the European variant of world’s cheapest car to Europe by 2012. It already showed the model in 2007 and generated an overwhelming customer response. “To market the Nano in Europe is a very good idea if they (Tata group) choose Turkey to make the vehicle,” said the Turkish Ambassador to India. “Tatas are already in the Turkish market. I think they are examining the market a little further in order to see if Turkey is a good place for setting up a factory. And this is what we want,” he added.

Turkey is a gateway to Europe and has a multi-lingual culture although it has dominating Turkish culture. Apart from Europe, it offers easy access to several major destinations including Middle East and Central Asia. Tata Motors is still studying the prospects of the market, the ambassodar said, adding that he had already held some discussions with the Ratan Tata-led company on the issue.

Tata Motors has expanded its production and assembly operations to several other countries including South Korea, Thailand, South Africa and Argentina and had earlier announced its plans to set up plants in Turkey, Indonesia and Eastern Europe. Tata also has franchisee/joint venture assembly operations in Kenya, Bangladesh, Ukraine, Russia and Senegal.
