Tata Motors is now eyeing to tap the diesel segment with its low-cost car Tata Nano by bringing the diesel variant. “The sky is the limit for a car that is priced under Rs 2 lakh and the task on hand is to ensure that every nook and corner of the country is covered to reach out to the Nano buyer,” say industry sources. Tata Motors is currently clocking sales of nearly 9000 units monthly of the Nano and the company is planning to expand rapidly once the mother plant is fully operational. It is also planning to start bookings of the car pan India.

The Sanand plant is expected to be increased to a capacity of 500,000 units annually by 2014 which means Tata Motors will be producing 40,000 units monthly beating Maruti Alto that is currently being produced 25,000 units every month.

Apart from the diesel variant, Tata Motors is also working on the electric variant of Indica for the Indian as well as overseas market. It will launch its electric Indica and Ace EV in Europe this fiscal and plans are already underway to introduce the electric variant in the British market by September-October 2010.
