Maruti Suzuki Wagon R has been a popular choice in the hatchback segment in India. The parent company, Suzuki is likely to showcase a crossover version of the Wagon R at the Jakarta Fair in Indonesia which is set begin on June 10. Back in 2014 Auto Expo, the company had showcased a similar model rechristened as the Maruti Suzuki Wagon R XRest.
The Suzuki Wagon R crossover is expected to be powered by the India-spec 1-litre, 3-cylinder engine that generates 67bhp of power and 90Nm of torque. The engine will come mated to a five-speed manual transmission and AMT options. In terms of design, the one seen at 2014 Auto Expo featured a new grille, LED elements in the tail lamps, projector headlamps and faux air vents on the front fenders. The car also had a rugged body kit including black plastic molding and a silver skid guard that flows from the front bumpers to sides and then going on to connect the rear bumper.
It could not be immediately known if the Suzuki Wagon R crossover will be introduced in any other market where Wagon R is currently sold. If introduced in India, it might evoke positive response given the growing popularity of crossover cars in the country. It might also add new elements to a car with more than a decade of presence in India.
