      Maruti to set-up new plant in Gujarat with an investment of $1.3 billion

      The country’s largest car maker, Maruti Suzuki India Limited (MSIL), will be investing $1.3 billion in the establishment of its new plant, which is coming-up in western Gujarat. The announcement comes at a time when the leading global car makers including Ford Motor and PSA Peugeot Citroen have already announced their plans to set-up their manufacturing units in the State of Gujarat.

      In a statement given to ET over phone, MSIL chairman R.C. Bhargava said, “This plant with a million capacity will be set up in phases over a number of years, the investment for which will be close to $1.3 billion." He however, maintained that western Gujarat is a potential location for the company’s upcoming manufacturing plant and company will take a final decision in this regard by the end of next month.

      Earlier this month, Maruti’s parent Suzuki’s chairman and CEO, Osamu Suzuki, met Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi to talk about the company’s upcoming plant in Gujarat.

      Maruti already has two huge manufacturing plants in the state of Haryana, one each at Manesar and Gurgaon. While Gurgaon plant has a total manufacturing capacity of up to 8 lakh units per annum, the Manesar plant produces 3.5 lakh units per annum, taking the total capacity of the company to over 12 lakh units per annum.
