Maruti SX4 phased out as Ciaz launch nears

India’s largest auto maker, Maruti Suzuki India has officially phased out SX4 sedan in India ahead of Ciaz launch in domestic market. The production was barred owing to the painstakingly slow response from customers every month. Available in petrol, diesel and CNG variants, SX4 after an initial spark faded away in the mist. Competition in C segment also intensified with launch of new City, while Verna has been a favourite contender in mid-sized sedan segment. In its small itinerary of seven years, the sedan underwent a couple of tweaks. MSI initially offered SX4 in petrol engine option only, the 1.6 litre, four cylinder petrol engine developing peak power of 102 Bhp powered saloon which was later modified to engender enhanced power of 105 Bhp. CNG variant became popular among the radio taxi and fleet operators since it was a viable option for them. Diesel variant on the other hand was inducted in February 2011, though against the expectations of the car maker, the diesel avatar of sedan could not spill magic in sales numbers.

Powered by Fiat sourced 1.3 litre, four cylinder, turbocharged diesel powertrain outputting 90 PS of top power, SX4 diesel offered more power than its siblings that also donned the same motor, however courtesy variable geometry turbo technology, the engine offered enhanced power.

Probably the conventional and boxy looks of the sedan did not work in its favour as rivals like Verna bestowed with the flexuous fluidic design and Honda City looked more contemporary and modish in comparison. SX4’s replacement, Ciaz has been worked upon meticulously by MSI. Ciaz concept clinched galore attention at the 2014 Auto Expo held in Greater Noida earlier this year. The launch is only a couple of months away, MSI will be rolling out Ciaz in petrol and diesel engine options. From the looks of it, Ciaz seems to have the potential to make it big in domestic market, however we still need to see how it performs on sales front once it gets launched in India.
