Apart from being a top player in the Indian market, Sri Lanka has been the second biggest market for Maruti Suzuki. The company has reportedly been working on a plan to setup a production facility there. Maruti Suzuki India had been making efforts earlier too which did not materialize owing to tax issues. This time around sources have revealed that the company and the local government have yet again engaged in talks and it is likely that plans could materialize this time around.

The announcement in this regard was reportedly done by Upul Jayasuriya, Board of Investment Chairman, Maruti Suzuki at the opening of the India sourcing exhibition at the Sri Lanka Exhibition & Convention Centre (SLECC), Colombo. Back in November Maruti Suzuki India reportedly sold a total of about 120,824 units of passenger vehicles in Sri Lanka. Maruti Suzuki also reportedly sold 10,225 units in exports and 1,10,599 units in the domestic market. As compared to the previous month the company reported a 9.7 percent growth.
