West Bengal Industrial Development Corporation (WBIDC) has sanctioned land to Maruti Suzuki India Limited (MSIL), the country's largest passenger car maker, for establishing a new stockyard spread over 40 acres at Panagarh Industrial Park around 150 km from Kolkata.

A senior official said, “We have agreed to give them (Maruti Suzuki India) 40 acres at Panagarh for their proposed project. Now, we have sent the proposal to the Industries Ministry for approval.” The Panagarh Industrial Park is situated in the Burdwan district of West Bengal and has been a private project of the WBIDC. The enormous park is spread over 1,458 acres of land and the proposal for new stockyard seems like a good deal for WBIDC.

Reportedly, MSIL's upcoming stockyard plan is the second proposed project in West Bengal after Siliguri and is believed to house a maximum 2,500 vehicles at its full capacity. Further, the state-of-art stockyard will service the company's eastern zone markets including the Indian states Bihar, West Bengal, Jharkhand, Orissa and Chhattisgarh.

MSIL is believed to benefit from the yet-to-be constructed stockyard as it will comprehensively augment the company's distribution efficiency and will also cut the time lag in the current vehicle delivery pattern.

According to sources, the upcoming stockyard will enable MSIL to deliver its products to its dealers operating in the aforementioned states within a period of just two days. This will significantly bring down the current waiting periods exercised by the company. Further it has been revealed that the other proposed Siliguri stockyard will take care of the company's delivery operations in the North-eastern states of the country.

MSIL, the country's favourite car manufacturer, is leaving no stone unturned in ensuring timely delivery of its vehicles across the length and breadth of the country. The company has planned to establish several stockyards in different Indian states, in order to improve its marketing and distribution channels by ensuring optimum delivery time-frame. Evidently, MSIL established its first world class stockyard in Bangalore last year.

The Mamata Banerjee led West Bengal government has earlier been chided for its treatment towards the Tata Motors' Singur production facility, which had to be transplanted to Gujarat, after all hell broke loose following political agitation and violent protests by the local public. The transplantation of the Tata Nano production unit entailed millions of damages for Tata Motors', which declared never to set afoot in the state of West Bengal. The new proposal for a stockyard by Maruti Suzuki is expected to run smooth and any mishap will totally spell catastrophe for the company, which had its worst year in the domestic car market following the ugly proceedings at its Manesar facility in July 2012.
