Mahindra and Mahindra already has its presence in the commercial vehicle segment in the US. It is planning to launch its model Scorpio shortly in the US. It is contemplating its options to set up an assembly plant in the US within months after the launch.

Pawan Goenka, Mahindra commented during Frankfurt Auto Show, “By mid-2010 we want to make a decision about whether to produce in the U.S. or not. If sales are right, we will start manufacturing in the U.S," he added. He did not state any figures for sales in the US but it is definitely looking at various options for assembling pickup trucks in the US. It will shortly decide whether it will buy or build up a plant in the country or rely on contractual manufacturing.

M&M currently does not have any plans of opening a production plant in Europe. "Volumes in Europe are very small, they were around 2,000 vehicles in our best year," he explained.

Mahindra is a strong contender in the Indian market and currently accounts for 65 percent of the 250,000 utility vehicles sold in India per year. It has extremely successful models like Scorpio, Xylo and Scorpio are known to be runaway success stories ever since they were first launched in the country.
