With effect from April 1, 2010 13 Indian cities adopted the BS-IV norms which made auto manufacturers to switch to more fuel efficient models with lower CO2 emission. As the country gets adaptive to the new norms, the next batch of Indian cities get ready to adopt new norms from October 01 2010 for BS-III two-wheelers.
Till date there was some confusion regarding adopting these norms for two-wheelers but the same has been clarified by the ministry. 13 cities of India will adopt these norms for two-wheelers now. While some of the two-wheeler manufacturers were selling BS-III models in these 13 cities, some continued to sell BS-II models only.
"There were lot of confusion in the past one month regarding implementation of the new emission norms, mainly for two-wheelers. After the minister signing it on Friday, the norms will be effective very soon," said a source from auto industry.
The ministry has issued a new notification for cities of Bangalore, Mumbai, Delhi, Pune, Kolkata, Chennai, Hyderabad, Bangalore, Ahmedabad, Kanpur, Agra, Surat, Lucknow and Sholapur to adopt BS-III norms for two-wheelers with immediate effect. Moreover,Lucknow and Sholapur will conform to BS-IV norms for four-wheelers from May 20.
