Honeywell Transportation Systems has decided to provide its diesel turbocharger technology, which comes with a variable geometry to Volkswagen and Skoda. The new 1.5 litre TDI diesel mill powered model has been developed and designed in India to meet the local needs of the market.

Volkswagen has selected Honeywell for this task owing to their experience of more than two decades in variable nozzle technology (VNT). This technology has come to the advantage of diesel engines with fuel economy, impressive responsiveness and performance. With Honeywell’s global technology platform and well-established design, the collaboration between the company’s personnel in India and Europe has been established.

Hans-Georg Festing, the Executive Director of Corporate Purchasing of Volkswagen India Pvt Ltd said, “With Honeywell, we have a trusted partner for high performance and extremely reliable turbochargers for our 1.5L TDI diesel engines. Additionally, Honeywell has helped us increase our local content with this high-value part for our engine and have contributed to our long-term localization strategy in India.”

Milind Godbole, the Managing Director of Honeywell Transportation Systems, India said, “Honeywell VNT technology is an upgrade to existing wastegate technology with its advanced aerodynamics and bearing systems allowing more precise control of air flow into the engine. This helps Volkswagen offer its customers improved fuel economy and uncompromising performance with high torque and power resulting in better responsiveness to the driver. Honeywell’s VNT technology is 30 per cent more space efficient helping Volkswagen engineers apply a more powerful, yet compact powertrain across a range of vehicles.”

The design, manufacturing centres at Bangalore and Pune and engineering have world-class facilities and have been treating global technology platforms to localized solutions. The 1.5 litre TDI diesel mill has replaced the 1.2 litre TDI diesel engine; while the 1.6 litre diesel mill in the Polo, Skoda Rapid and Volkswagen Vento.

The downsized models have come up with up to 40 per cent better fuel-economy as well as emissions. Also, the cars have showed improved torque outputs with similar power outputs.
