Honda Cars India, the completely owned domestic division of Japanese auto maker, has introduced its much awaited Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) CR-V in the Indian auto market. The auto maker has offered an option of two petrol engines with its new model, namely 2 litre and 2.4 litre, at price tags of Rs. 19.9 lakh and Rs. 23.8 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi), respectively. In order to meet the demands of a large number of buyers, the car maker has also launched an automatic transmission model in the 2 litre engine option at a price tag of Rs. 20.8 lakh.

Expressing his views on the launch ceremony, the President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Honda India, Hironori Kanayama was quoted as saying, “We are entering a new phase in India with the all new CR-V. Over the past few years Honda and its associates have been working on developing new products.” He further said, “Some of these new models will come to the Indian market in the next few years. We are committed to bring the latest models from Honda's global portfolio in India.”

The new CR-V is assembled at the auto maker’s Greater Noida plant, which has helped it to competitively price the new model in the Indian market. Initially, CR-V was brought to the Indian shores in 2003 and was believed to be an important model for the company’s expansion in the country. However it did not turned out to be an ace for the Japanese auto maker in India.

Reportedly, the erstwhile 2 litre manual transmission guise of CR-V was offered with a price tag of Rs. 22.6 lakh, whereas the recently introduced model has witnessed a cut of almost Rs. 2.5 lakh, which might turn the tides in Honda’s favour. Similarly, the new automatic version of CR-V has witnessed a price cut by close to Rs. 2.5 lakh over the previous generation model, which was offered at Rs. 24.9.

Speaking on the plan for introduction of the diesel engine in the Indian auto market owing to the ever increasing petrol prices, Honda India’s Senior Vice President Marketing and Sales, Jnaneswar Sen commented, “It will not be affected. The Amaze sedan will come as per plan. There will still be demand for diesel vehicles.”

Industry experts believe that the Amaze sedan will sparkle over the Indian roads somewhere in April this year and will be placed in the entry level sedan segment, a section which was not given due by the auto maker in the Indian auto industry from a long time.
