The Indian unit of US based leading car maker General Motors, said on Sunday that it will hire as many as 1,000 people by year 2012. The decision can be seen as a part of company’s plans of enhancing its current production capacity at two facilities by 80 percent to 4.1 lakh units per annum.

At present, the company has two manufacturing facilities at Halol in Gujarat and Talegaon in Maharashtra. The company is investing over Rs 2,200 crore to firm-up its R&D activities and expand its capacity by the end of next year.

In a recent statement given to PTI, General Motors India President and MD Karl Slym said, "We are investing USD 500 million to expand our output at both Halol and Talegoan. To meet the requirement, we will probably be hiring 1,000 people by the end of next year."

While the annual production capacity at its Halol plant will be increased to 1.1 lakh units annually from the existing capacity of 85,000 units, the capacity at the Talegaon plant will be increased to 3 lakh units from 1.4 lakh units by the end of this year. Mr. Slym said that construction activities are going on at the two plants for expanding the capacities.
