The American car maker, General Motors, plans to launch new alternative fuel models in India. General Motors India will introduce LPG version of Spark and CNG version of Aveo in April 2009. It is also testing six of its models for bio-diesel. It already sells CNG version of Optra in few cities in India.

“The tests will be over by the beginning of next year after which we will take a call on it. Fuel economy is the most urgent requirement today and we are looking at launching a range of cars with alternate fuel options.” Mr Slym, President and Managing Director, GM India. He also reiterated that the company aims to make India as its manufacturing hub in Asia-Pacific regions for engines required by its models. It will hire 300 engineers next year for its power-train plant.

The company has invested heavily in its Indian operations and it plans to continue expanding its presence in the country. It has also announced recently that it will enter the used-car market in India next month. The service will be available only for the GM car models.
