      BMW India enhances capacity to 10,000 units

      The Indian unit of Germany based leading luxury car maker BMW has enhanced the production capacity at its Chennai plant to 10,000 units from previous capacity of 6,000 units per annum. The move has been taken in a bid to strengthen its leading position in the Indian market.

      BMW’s board member Ian Robertson said in a statement on Tuesday, "If the market continues to grow at the same pace, we could consider looking at a second production facility by 2015."While further elaborating company’s future plans in the country, he said, "We are continuously looking at new models and cannot rule out launch of the second generation of the BMWi series in emerging markets."

      At present, BMW India assembles a number of its portfolio in the Indian market that comprises of sedans like BMW 3-Series, 5-Series and SUV X1. Moreover the company is also planning to assemble the X3 model in the Indian market by mid 2011.

      Also, the continuously rising fuel prices have forced the car maker to increase its focus over the development of electric and hybrid range of cars for the rapidly growing markets like Indian and China. The company is gearing-up to roll-out its first all-electric vehicle – i3 – in coming months in the Indian market.
