Government of India has planned to tighten the emission norms in India. It shall soon be extending the Bharat Stage III norms all over India. Moreover, the Bharat Stage IV norms shall be extended to 11 mega cities of India. These norms would be effective from April 1, 2010.

Union Minister of Shipping, Road Transport and highways, TR Baalu, made the announcement at the 18th meeting of Consultative Committee of Members of Parliament. Bharat Stage III norms are Indian version of Euro norms for emission standards. They shall be applicable to all four wheelers in the country by the year 2010. Meanwhile, four wheelers in 11 mega cities of India shall have to adhere to Bharat Stage IV norms.

Baalu also announced that at least one percent of cess from petrol and diesel shall go towards road and safety norms in India. According to the statistics, there is one road accident in India every minute and there is one road accident death in the country in every five minutes. Such unnerving statistics call for serious actions for road safety norms as well. He also announced that government shall expedite all steps to implement road safety in the country.
