There is no secret that Mitsubishi is working on the next-generation Pajero Sport, which is expected to unveil in Thailand by the end of 2015. The SUV is likely to be launched in India in 2016, while its production will take place at HMFCL (Hindustan Motor Finance Corp’s) manufacturing unit in Tamil Nadu.

Seen here’s the rendered image of the 2016 Mitsubishi Pajero Sport, which is based on the leaked patent sketches of the car. Featuring the RISE (Reinforced Impact Safety Evolution safety body, the new-gen Pajero Sport will be safer than the existing model. It will offer better cabin space and styling, coupled with improved handling. The updated model will be based the ladder-frame chassis that also underpins the new Mitsubishi L200 Triton.

While the dimensions and design remain unchanged, the front and rear end receive significant updates. Inspired from the GR-HEV, the front fascia of the SUV features a ‘Dynamic Shield’ X-shaped grille with small headlight clusters that might get LED elements. The rear end, too, is revised with vertically-stacked light clusters.

Powering the next-gen Pajero Sport will be an all-new 2.4-litre MIVEC diesel engine that also does duty on the new L200. This powertrain is mated to a 6-speed manual and an automatic transmission that help the car develop a maximum power of 181PS and 430Nm of torque. The SUV will continue to be available with 2WD and optional 4WD drivetrain options.

The 2016 Mitsubishi Pajero Sport will take on the likes of the new-generation Hyundai Santa Fe, Toyota Fortuner and Ford Endeavour.
