      Very Small Cars for Urban India

      Tata Nano has introduced a new segment in the auto industry around the world – the segment of ‘very’ small cars. The Tata Nano, primarily referred to with its price tag, has definitely created a niche which still seems to have lot of potential. Automakers have taken a serious note of the new segment and few of them have already started working on the same.

      Bajaj-Renault-Nissan had long back announced introducing their sub-compact car in the domestic market and had specifically referred that it will carry a Nano price tag. As per the latest statements from Rajiv Bajaj, MD, Bajaj Auto, it will be in the Indian market by end of 2012. The final specifications or even its initial design is not out yet. Bajaj will lend its technical input in manufacturing while Renault and Nissan are expected to sell the car under their brand name.

      Piaggio is also developing a low-cost three seater car whose idea was conceived in India only. The car is expected to hit the roads by late 2013. It carries impression and concept of 4-wheel model Smart ForTwo. It features a central front seat for driving and two rear seats. The car has been codenamed as NT3 and is still in development stages. According to Piaggio boss Roberto Colannino, the company is aiming at big sales numbers with this model in Asia and Europe especially targeting India.

      Hyundai Ha is also on cards and is soon to be launched in emerging markets including India. In India, it will be powered by an 800cc engine and will be priced at Rs. 2-3 lakh. it will compete with models like high end Tata Nano and Maruti Alto.
