The recent reduction in Value Added Tax (VAT) on battery-operated vehicles, hybrid cars and e-rickshaws from 12.5 per cent to 5 per cent in Delhi has resulted in Toyota Camry Hybrid being offered cheaper by Rs 2.30 lakh. The reduction in VAT comes forth as the government’s initiative to promote eco-friendly vehicles that help reduce pollution and also help in bringing relief to a large number of entrepreneurs who earn their livelihood by plying e-rickshaws.

Owing to reduced VAT, the popular Toyota Camry Hybrid which was priced at Rs 33.20 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi) is now offered at Rs 30.90 lakh (Ex-showroom, Delhi). The Camry sedan was launched in India way back in 2013 and as per updates from the company as much as 90 per cent of the demand has been for the Camry Hybrid. From January to April this year, Toyota sold about 419 units of the Camry Hybrid, while only 44 units of the regular petrol-powered model were sold in the same period.

Under the hood, the Toyota Camry Hybrid is powered by a 2.5-litre four-cylinder VVT-i engine supported by a permanent magnet synchronous motor with a 6.5 Ah nickel-metal hybrid battery pack. The Hybrid Synergy Drive system is capable of sensing and changing the source of power from petrol engine to electric motor. Mated to an E-CVT automatic transmission, the cumulative power output is 199bhp and 213Nm of torque. The hybrid claims to return a fuel efficiency figure of 19kmpl.

It is worth noting that the new price reduction due to lower VAT is limited to the Camry Hybrid sold in Delhi, while prices in other states have not been changed.
