Back in the year 2009, Google first allowed the world to catch a glimpse autonomous-car project that has been part of Google X program. Apart from self-driving cars, the innovations lab also showcased new and novel technologies like Google Glass Web-connected eyewear. As per a fresh update from the technological giant, the vehicle is likely to be rolled out on the tarmac in about next 5 years without requiring it to be driven through a regulatory red tape.

At the recently held conference in Detroit, Chris Urmson, Chief of the software giant’s autonomous-car project, said, “We don’t think there is a regulatory block. Google is working with U.S. regulators on testing driver-less cars and the worst thing possibly we could do is surprise them.” Speaking about how the cars would be licensed, Mr. Urmson added, “We believe there are places in the U.S. where this is legal.”

Commenting further on the occasion, a spokesperson from the agency said, “Just like any car built for use on U.S. roads, any autonomous vehicle would need to meet applicable federal motor vehicle safety standards, which falls under NHTSA’s jurisdiction. The agency will have the appropriate policies and regulations in place to ensure the safety of these types of vehicles.”
