Renault Duster, a compact SUV launched by French auto maker Renault during 2012, has sold a total of 5362 units last month, a whopping 10 fold increase in sales in comparison to April 2012. With this amazing growth rate, it certainly seems ahead of previously popular utility vehicles (UVs) such as Scorpio and Quanto, from Mahindra & Mahindra. The utility vehicle (UV) segment in India is clearly poised in an interesting position at present, throwing up several surprises in the past few months.

A look at the sales figures for the month of March 2013 will give a better idea of the current scenario. While 1857 units of the Quanto and 4658 units of the Scorpio were sold in the above mentioned period, French auto maker Renault went way ahead, with 6313 units of the Duster sold in March. Interestingly, the combined sales of both Mahindra vehicles is marginally higher than sales of the Duster.

These figures clearly indicate that people have certainly been appreciating the Renault’s product over its rivals. A preference for the Duster can be analysed through several parameters- for one, the Duster's design is newer than the Quanto and the Scorpio. The Scorpio's design is more than a decade old and the Quanto is actually a chopped version of the Xylo, with a tyre at its rear. Even though the Duster does not have the same 4x4 abilities as the Scorpio, it definitely looks more muscular, without too many frills.

Another reason for the Duster's popularity goes to its superior finish and build quality. A closer look at the SUV from inside and outside indicates that there are no gaps between the door panels, which can be seen in the Mahindra vehicles. In addition, quality of plastics used is also a notch higher in the Duster, which is one area where Mahindra needs to focus harder.

On the road, it is the Duster which once again scores higher due to a lighter weight. Engine refinement levels are also higher than the Mahindra UVs. All versions of the Scorpio and Quanto come with diesel engines, whereas the Duster also has a petrol option. With the above mentioned facts, it is clear that Mahindra has to refine its product portfolio further, if it has to record better sales than Renault in the near future. A newer version of the Scorpio is expected to be seen in 2013 and it will be interesting to see how the vehicle would stand among its competitors.
