Until now Tesla customers could charge their electric cars free of cost at any of the company’s widespread supercharger stations. However, Tesla model 3 customers might not get as lucky. At the recently held 2016 annual shareholder meeting, Elon Musk, CEO, Tesla Motors, announced that it would be difficult to provide subsidized charging options especially for a car which is anticipating high volume sales.

Speaking about it, Musk said, “Superchargers are set up, at least today, for people who bought the car, as free long distance for life. Obviously that has, fundamentally, a cost. The obvious thing to do is to decouple that from the cost of the Model 3. So it will still be very cheap and far cheaper than gasoline to drive long distance with the Model 3, but it will not be free long distance unless you purchase that package.”

Currently, Tesla has 632 charging stations with 3,780 Superchargers globally. For now, the company has not revealed the cost of the charging package. The upcoming Tesla Model 3 will be offered in single-motor rear-wheel drive and dual-motor all-wheel drive configurations, thereby allowing it to clock 0 to 97kmph in just under six-seconds. On a full charge, the car is capable of covering a distance of 346kms.
