      Maruti Suzuki plans to set-up 20 lakh unit capacity plant in Gujarat

      Maruti Suzuki, the largest car maker in the Indian market, said on Tuesday that it could invest upto Rs 18,000 crore in the state of Gujarat with its vendors for setting-up a production unit in the state with a maximum capacity of 20 lakh units. In a bid to expedite establishment of the company’s manufacturing unit in the state, Maruti Suzuki India’s Chairman R C Bhargava and Managing Director Shinzo Nakanishi, met with state chief minister Narendra Modi.

      Mr. Bhargava told reporters in Gandhinagar on Tuesday, "First phase of production would be of capacity of one million cars, which would take approximately five years to install. At current cost, that would entail an investment of Rs 6,000 crore."

      If everything goes according to plan, the company is eying to add another million cars in the capacity with the corresponding investments. Mr. Bhargava added that along with that, the company would get all the vendors, suppliers to come here and their investments would also be of the order of about Rs 6,000 odd crore.

      However, the company is yet to finalize the investments and plans of setting-up a manufacturing unit in the state. The locations where the company has zeroed-in include Sanand, Halol and Dholera.
