      Maruti Suzuki geared up to establish R&D centre at Rohtak

      Maruti Suzuki India, the leading passenger vehicles manufacturer of India established the foundation stone for its research and development centre in the city of Rohtak. In order to set up this facility, the company plans to invest in between Rs. 2,000 crore to Rs. 2,400 crore. As per company reports, the facility will be spread across 600 acres. Maruti Suzuki India (MSI) Managing Director and CEO Shinzo Nakanishi, said, “It (the centre) will augment the R&D capability of Maruti Suzuki engineers manifold. This will enable us to design, develop and launch cars at a faster pace."

      He further added that the proposed centre will feature latest R&D infrastructure. The foundation stone of the R&D Centre and Proving Ground will be laid down by the Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda. An additional investment of Rs. 900 crore has been announced by MSI last month for the R&D unit by 2014. In order to set up a test track, Rs. 1500 crore has been invested by the company.

      For the Rohtak centre, the company is planning to establish facilities for safety and testing for emission. MSI said, "The R&D Centre at Rohtak will be an integrated facility for vehicle testing and evaluation, which is crucial for developing new car models.” Since quite a long time, MSI has been scaling up capabilities for research & development. The engineers of the company have designed and developed models like Ertiga and the Swift with the assistance of R&D unit of Suzuki in Japan. Maruti Suzuki has performed well in alternative fuel technology. Many CNG and LPG models have been developed by the R&D unit, which are running successfully on roads.
