In order to give a push to the production of greener vehicles in the country, the Indian government has approved a 230 billion rupee ($4.13 billion). Under the new plan, the government has set-up a target of the production of 6 million electric and hybrid vehicles by year 2020. Out of these, about 4 to 5 million are expected to be two-wheelers.

At present, the number of electric and hybrid car makers is much lesser in the Indian market as compared to their foreign counterparts like US and Europe. The acceptance of these kinds of vehicles is very less in the country with almost non-existent support infrastructure.

At present, Mahindra Reva is the only electric car maker in the Indian market which sells Reva I electric cars in both domestic and foreign markets. In a recent statement, Mr. Pawan Goenka, chairman of Mahindra Reva said, “The question is the viability. The cost of the car and how much the consumer can pay, there is a gap.”

Meanwhile, the neighboring country China has set a target of producing 500,000 electric and hybrid cars there by year 2015.
