Euro NCAP (European New Car Assessment Programme) is an independent organisation that performs crash tests on new vehicles to assess their safety. The organisation recently put the India-bound Volkswagen Tiguan through its rigorous test programme and much to VW’s delight; the crossover has been awarded with the maximum 5-star rating.

The overall safety rating of five stars has been gathered from the results out of four sub-sections: occupant protection for adults and children; pedestrian protection; and driver assistance systems. The Tiguan passed the tests with top marks thanks to its package of active and passive safety features, a highly effective safety belt, seat and airbag combination and several other driver assistance systems.

Since 1997, Euro NCAP has been regarded as one of the most important benchmarks for vehicle safety in Europe. This year, the conditions for the test were made even tougher. In the extensive testing of occupant safety for adults the new Tiguan achieved a 96 per cent of the maximum rating.

While the first-gen Tiguan never made it to the Indian market, the second-gen model (tested here) is definitely headed our shores. Globally, up to three new petrol engines, with power outputs from 125bhp to 180bhp and four new diesel engines ranging from 115bhp to 240bhp are on offer. Gearbox options, meanwhile, include either a 6-speed manual or a 7-speed DSG.

A powerful yet efficient diesel engine paired to a DSG would certainly add to this car’s appeal here in India. Having shown it at the 2016 Auto Expo, Volkswagen India has officially announced that they will bring the Tiguan to India during this fiscal year.
