The Indian subsidiary of US based leading car maker General Motors is facing a loss of production of 100 units per day as the labor unrest at its Halol plant (in Gujarat) entered into its second week. Early last week on 16th of March, the workers of GM’s Halol plant resorted to strike. The Halol plant of the company has a capacity to produce 85,000 units a year. This is the second time in last five months at GM Halol plant when labourers of the plant resorted to strike.

The labourers are protesting transfer of some of the workers to the dealership outlets and also opposing the long term wage settlement agreement which was signed in December last year. The company is now rolling-out 70 units daily as opposed to 190 units earlier.

In a statement given to PTI, GM India Vice President P Balendran said, "Of about 900 workmen, 550 have reported, while 350 are still absent. Currently we are producing in only one shift." He added that the production loss so far is about 600 units.

On the other hand, Bharat Maganbhai, GM Employees' Union General Secretary Patel said in a statement, "They (striking workers) are protesting against the transfer of four employees. But our contract clearly says that we can be transfered to any dealer point on work related issues... Such strikes are not good for us".
