Bonds affair with hot cars

Hollywood fans from around the world go crazy for James Bond movies that are based on books written by Ian Fleming. Bond flicks are all about action and thrill, but what truly characterises these films are the Bond girls and luxury cars. From 1969 till now, Bond movies have featured numerous car models of around 13 different manufacturers.

Alfa Romeo Automobiles S.p.A had lent its Alfa Romeo GTV6 in ‘Octopussy’ that came in the year 1983. The car models Alfa Romeo 156 and 159 were then seen in the 2008 Bond flick, Quantum of Solace.

Several car models by American Motors Corporation (AMC) were used in 5 bond movies. In ‘The Man With The Golden Gun’ (1974), AMC Hornet, Matador Coupe and Matador Sedan were used while directing different film sequences. Two different models of AMC, namely Concord and Jeep Wagoneer, were showcased in the 1979 ‘Moonraker’. AMC’s Jeep Cherokee (XJ) was shown in the ‘A View to a Kill’ (1985) and ‘Tomorrow Never Dies’ (1997).

Aston Martin was next in line to showcase its models in various Bond flicks. ‘Goldfinger’ (1964), ‘On Her Majesty’s Secret Service’ (1969), ‘Golden Eye’ (1995), ‘Tomorrow Never Dies’ (1997), ‘Casino Royale’ (2006) and ‘Quantum of Solace’ (2008) are some of the films that used Aston Martin cars. ‘The Living Daylights’ (1987) and ‘Die Another Day’ (2002) showcased Aston Martin V8 Vantage Volante and Aston Martin V12 Vanquish, respectively.

Audi and Bentley cars were also used while filming various action sequences in Bond movies. Bentley Mark IV was featured in 'From Russia With Love' (1963) and Audi A6 and Audi 200 Avant and Quattro were showcased in ‘Quantum of Solace’ (2008) and 'The Living Daylights' (1987). BMW, a contemporary of these two car makers, also featured four of its cars, namely BMW 518i, Z3, 750iL and Z8, in Bond films.

Lotus, General Motors, Ford Motor Company, Jaguar-Land Rover, Rolls Royce and Mercedes-Benz are some other globally recognised automobile manufacturers that have added grace to the Bond flicks with their cars. GM has put as many as 14 of its models in 9 Bond films over the years and Ford even topped that by presenting 24 cars in 11 movies of the franchise. 13 cars by British car maker Jaguar-Land Rover have also been shown in 8 movies of the series.

Lotus Espirit Turbo and Lotus Espirit S1 were used by James Bond in ‘For Your Eyes Only’ (1981) and ‘The Spy Who Loved Me’ (1977), respectively. Mercedes-Benz was able to capture the spectators’ attention by bringing in a total of 9 models like Mercedes-Benz 180, 220S, 600, 280 SE, 250 SE, W111, W115, W150 and W126 in 8 different movies. Rolls Royce presented Silver Wraith, Phantom III, Silver Shadow, Silver Wraith II, Silver Shadow and Silver Cloud II in 10 of the films of the Bond franchise.

All these car manufacturers have enticed automobile aficionados from time to time with the thrilling chases and elegant looks of their products. These sporty cars have certainly provided an extra edge to Bond movies as well as the protagonist himself. It can be said that it is not only the films that have been able to achieve success, as the car manufacturers also got the perfect platform to promote their products worldwide.
