BMW India has announced that it will be assembling its new crossover SUV model BMW X1 at its Chennai plant in India. The car which is a milestone for the company in Indian context will be imported as a completely knocked down unit in India. BMW will make necessary investments at its Chennai plant to facilitate the assembly of its luxury car models. BMW X1 was present at the recent Delhi Auto Expo 2010 as well.

"The CKD production of the BMW X1 is a key milestone in BMW Group’s India strategy. The BMW X1 opens up a new luxury segment in the compact Sports Activity / Sports Utility Vehicle class, demonstrating once again the company’s fine sense for pioneering automotive trends. The BMW X1 is a modern vehicle that represents new interpretation of sheer driving pleasure and, like no other vehicle, a spontaneous lifestyle. It convincingly perpetuates the success story of BMW in India."

BMW is already leading the Indian luxury car segment since it overtook Mercedes last years with its robust sales figures. The company is expanding now to Tier-II cities and penetrating its network and operations pan-India. BMW currently has 12 dealers in 10 cities of India and now it intends to add 10 more dealers from Tier-II cities.
