Volkswagen showcased the I.D. Buzz Concept at the ongoing Detroit Motor Show. The I.D. Buzz is second in the I.D. program from Volkswagen after the hatchback that was unveiled at the 2016 Paris Motor Show. The Buzz Concept carries the retro styling of the Microbus while still being futuristic.

Upfront there is a large VW logo, just like the iconic Microbus, along with dual tone exterior paint and three rows on the inside. The sleek LED headlights and wrap around tail lights are signature I.D. The boxy design with a little overhang and large wheelbase gives the Buzz a large and spacious cabin. The seating position is flexible with the third row turning into a bed, the second row can be transformed into a table whereas the front row seats swivel 180degrees.

The cabin gets an augmented reality heads-up display, touch-capacitive surfaces, ambient lighting, panoramic roof, and an enormous infotainment screen. Based on the Volkswagen’s specially developed platform for future EVs - Modular Electric Drive Kit (MED), the Buzz is powered by two electric motors. A large 111kWh battery pack is stored under the floor of the vehicle and the Buzz puts out a combined output of 369bhp from the two motors. Volkswagen claims a 0-100kmph sprint time of 5 seconds but the top speed is restricted to 160kmph to conserve the charge. The range of the Buzz varies between 400 and 600km depending upon the cycle, meanwhile, the battery can be charged to 80 per cent in around 30 minutes. The I.D. Buzz could also be configured as a two-wheel-drive with a 268bhp electric motor on the rear axle.

The I.D. Buzz is fully autonomous as well. At a simple push of a button, the steering will retract into the dashboard making more interior space. Once in the I.D. Pilot mode, the car employs laser scanners, ultrasonic sensors, radar sensors, side view cameras and a front camera to monitor the surroundings giving the I.D. Buzz its full autonomous credentials. According to Volkswagen, this self-driving tech will make it to production as early as 2025.

Volkswagen has moved its focus on developing EVs after the infamous diesel gate and intents to launch 30 new EVs by 2025. The I.D. series would include five of it and include a hatchback, crossover, luxury sedan, a sports car, and an MPV.
