Europe's biggest car maker and part of Porsche, Volkswagen Group, is planning to set up research centre in India. It has already set up a research centre in China three years ago where it researches on accident sites and thereafter incorporate safety features as per the driving conditions in the country.
According to Krishna Dhawan, Head of Technical Office, Skoda India, the company believes that each country has its unique driving conditions that need to be understood in order to install appropriate safety features. Skoda Auto is a part of Volkswagen Group. Skoda is coming up with a manufacturing plant in Chakan, near Pune, with a capacity of 1.1 lakh annual capacity. It has invested nearly 580 million Euros in setting up the plant.
VW research units evaluates various parameters before customising its cars according to country=specific needs. It studies road and traffic conditions, driving behaviour, infrastructure as well as social conditioning before installing its safety features. Its research centre in China has been quite successful and the company is evaluating the possibility of setting up similar plant in India as well which might prove to be helpful.
