Sixth generation VW Golf has emerged as a leader in Europe as the top selling model in September. It sold 59,552 units which is 56 percent higher than the number of models sold in the same period last year. Ford Fiesta emerged as the second best model with sales of 51,291 units and Vauxhall/Opel Corsa positioned as the third most popular model with sales of 38,947 units.

However, according to the industry experts the sales figures may not be sustainable in the coming months as governments across Europe have decided to withdraw the scrappage scheme. “This has clearly distorted the natural performance of some markets and models. Now the end is in sight for these incentives, we will be watching the market closely, to see if this recovery is sustainable,” says auto analyst David Di Girolamo, head of JATO Dynamics who track data of the auto industry.

Other popular cars in Europe that topped the charts were Ford Focus, Peugeot 207, Opel Astra, Renault Cio, Fiat Punto, Fiat Panda, Renault Megane. VW Golf clocked maximum sales in home country Germany. Volkswagen has also strengthened its position in the global market with its share of the world passenger car market rising to 11.7 percent in the first nine months of 2009.
