The management as well as the striking employees continued to make their own statement as the labour unrest at Hyundai Motor's manufacturing plant at Sriperumbudur entered the sixth day. The management said that the support for the stir has weakened, whereas the striking employees claimed it false.

The management in a statement said, "Production at its plants continue to be normal and the absenteeism percentage fell by five per cent on Monday showing the weakening support for the illegal disruption of work." The statement also said that the production at the plant remained unaffected by the stir and the operation was normal.

Negating this statement, a source in Hyundai Motor India Employees Union, who wished to remain anonymous, said that the number of striking employees was increasing with every passing day. A senior HMIEU representative talking to PTI said, "About 90 per cent of the employees working in body shop have joined the protest. Day by day, the employee joining the protest is increasing. So far there are about 450 people resorting to strike."

The representative also said that the Union has sought the intervention of government and hence a three party meeting between the management, union and the government is likely to take place this week.

He further said, "Our demand is to reconsider the dismissal (of employees) in 2008 and reinstate them. It is a social issue. It should be considered on humanitarian basis."

A section of worker at Hyundai's Sriperumbudur facility had started the agitation demanding the recognition of the employee Union and to take back the sacked employees.

Hyundai Motor India in the statement, however, made it clear that the company would not recognise any politically backed union and would stick to the terms and conditions of the tripatrite settlement reached between the employees and the management on December 8, 2010.

The statement also said that HMIL recognised United Union of Hyundai Employees (UUHE) as the official union, which managed to get a membership of 1300 permanent workers out of the total 2,007 permanent workers at the plant.
