Owing to the fateful day witnessed on July 18, 2012 by Maruti Suzuki India Limited (MSIL), the auto giant has delivered a statement that it will not pay salaries for the month of July 2012 to more than 2,000 workers, right from the top brass of the company to labour. The mishap happened at the Maruti Suzuki’s Manesar manufacturing facility forced the largest car maker of the country to shutdown its production, which left it with the loss of millions.
As per the regular schedule, all the workers at company’s Manesar plant get their salary on the first date of every month. Giving his conformation on the move of auto maker, its Chief Operating Officer (Administration), S Y Siddiqui, quoted, “No one working at the Manesar plant will be given salary. According to the rule, after the company's lockout, workers are not paid till the time it (lockout) is revoked.” However, he later added that the employees of Gurgaon facility are paid their salaries as per the regular schedule.
Reportedly, there has been no official information regarding the restarting of production process at company’s Manesar plant. Another Maruti official commented, “The monthly wages of employees for the period before the incident, will be paid only after the lockout is rolled back and the plant starts functioning. Workers had damaged everything – computers, server cables and entire data on July 18. At present, the company has no records of the workers and their duty-hours details for the entire month. The data will have to be retrieved and only after that the payment will be made.”
On getting well-known with the company’s plans of not paying the salaries, the employees who were not a part of the strife were quite shocked. On the situation, one of the workers said, “I have come to know that no one will be paid salary. August 2 is Raksha Bandhan and I don't have any money. I don't know how I will manage this crisis.”
On this move of MSIL, analysts believe that the financial decision taken by the car maker may be good for the company, but it will worsen the situation as labourers are bound to get upset.
